The Colombian bank – Banco Davivienda – part of the Bolivar Group is to buy HSBC Central America for $800 million
Banco Davivienda has acquired the operations of HSBC in Costa Rica, El Salvador and Honduras.
Up until September 30th HSBC had 136 branches in the three Central American countries, handling $4.3 billion in assets and $2.5 billion in loans.
The transaction is subject to approval by the respective supervisory authorities and is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2012.
Seems like it was only yesterday when HSBC acquired Banex which then evolved into HSBC here.

Something has changed at the center of HSBC’s thinking. A few months ago, they announced that they were selling a large number of their branches in the northeast U.S. Now they’re divesting themselves of their holding in Costa Rica.
Scott, what do you suppose the implications are for Banco HSBC’s customers here?

A year or so ago, CitiBank bought out Banco Cuscatlan. Then they proceeded to run the San Isidro PZ branch in the ground. Nearly all of the friendly cashiers and platform personel are gone. Some jumped ship early because of poor treatment. Other s either finally left or were let go. Now the branch only has 2 cashiers and 0 customer service. My preferred bank became my ex-bank. It was not worth giving them my business any longer. Also I understand that if they go under, the funds are only guaranteed 10%. I don’t know if that is a possibility, though. Citi has one of the largest buildings in San Jose. You can’t miss it on the Pam American. We are choosing to stick with the national banks now, namely BCR, because they have taken steps to make their customer service more efficient and they have parking in PZ.
i was in HSBC yesterday and was told that only the name will change — the account numbers will be the same, and the employees will be the same. of course, they will change our debit cards. vamos a ver.
HSBC has changed dramatically since they were the Honk Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation… It’s probably a bit more complicated now to move opium money…

did they date back, then, to the Opium wars? or after in the drug trade?
