I did search for organic stuff on this site and saw all the posts but could not find anything about buying organic foods in san jose.
Anybody know of good organic stores in san jose or escazu or santa ana especially for eggs?

There are 2 organic markets that I know of in the San Jose area. One is in Escazu on Wednesdays and the other in San Jose on Saturdays. I will look for the address info and post back. The AutoMercado in Escazu and Lindora does sell a “free range” egg… Brand name is (Huevo Criollo) and in Spanish says Huevos Pastoreo/pasture eggs on the package, yet it does not compare to the eggs from my birds in the yard. Still I do purchase from time to time. I do not recall seeing organic eggs at either of the markets but that could change from time to time.November 24, 2009 at 6:44 pm #160588grb1063MemberMost all of the farmer’s markets or ferias have organic eggs, chickens and produce and are typically held on Saturday mornings. We frequent the small one in Ciudad Colon but if you are not there by 9, the eggs and chicken are gone. Grecia has a MAJOR feria on Friday night & Saturday morning with covered stalls/walkways that also has numerous street food vendors.

We too raise meat and egg layers but they eat ‘bulk feed’ bought from suppliers as it is hard for them to get enough ‘feed’ from grubs in the yard. And so some would consider this ‘non-organic’ as ‘special drops’ (I don’t know what they are called, sorry) are required for young chicks.

None of the chickens are the eggs are the same size, shape or color. It is an older lady that runs the stand and she typically sells out within 30-45 minutes. Tough to live off of bugs and grub and get fat quickly, but bulk grain feed I would consider OK and superior to hormone injected Pipasa. I have a friend here in WA state that has chicken, duck, goose and turkey eggs. Turkey eggs changes the meaning of a 2 egg omelet!

We are relishing lots of fresh goat milk right now, as we have 6 new ‘kids’ over the past few weeks, so with the addition of some really fresh eggs ‘[b][i]arroz con leche[/i][/b]’ never tasted so good!November 25, 2009 at 3:52 pm #160592grb1063MemberWe would like to learn how to make goat cheese. Any suggestions on where to start? Like a recipe? We are going to get goats next summer for our 5 acre parcel near Stanwood, WA to control the blackberry brambles. Interested in Yogurt too.
November 25, 2009 at 8:14 pm #160593costaricafincaParticipantI have a book called ‘Goats produce too! The udder real thing’, by Mary Jane Toth. Pretty basic, but yogurt is in it as well.
The problem is that you need a [i]lot[/i] of milk to produce a very [i]small[/i] amount of cheese, so you really do have to have a decent sized herd, consisting of milk producing female goats. Presently we have 5 goats that just had ‘kids’ so we milk once a day, and the rest is for the ‘kids’. There is a commercial goat farm not that far from here, and they remove the ‘kids’ after a day or two from the mother, so as to sell the milk/produce. Most cheese recipes require at least a gallon of milk….
I make ‘something that resembles cottage cheese/ricotta cheese’ and use it as such (locals here call it [i]’Leche agria’.[/i])The dogs love the ‘whey/juice that remains’.
But for 4 qts. of milk, you only get 1-2 cups of ‘cheese’. I also ‘beat it’ with an electric mixer and add herbs to it. -
