Safety equipment in motor cars

Can anyone clarify exactly what one is supposed to carry in your car in the way of fire extinguisher etc. We were stopped by the police this weekend and they wanted to see our “band aids”?? Needless to say we did not know what he was on about so “got away” with it. Forget checking if our fire extinguisher had expired or not, forget if there was actually anything in the triangle boxes we showed him, forget the 3 motor cyclists who went past without crash helmets etc – no where were our band aids.
