Home › Forums › Costa Rica Living Forum › Looking for a Belgian Malinois
We are ready to add another dog to our family, and have done enough research to find that this breed would be a great choice. We need dog that can act as a guard dog, and be able to be well trained enough to be easily around our friends and guests.
We ultimately plan on adding two dogs, and prefer to rescue.
If there is any possibility that there is a Malinois in need of rescuing/adopting, then of course that would be great.
If not, then we are thinking that we may do a combination of a rescue with one, and if need be, purchasing a Malinois.
I realize that they may be quite expensive, and we are hoping it would not be “too much”
Anybody?
Thanks, Mark in Manuel Antonio.
Doesn’t this breed prefer a cool climate?
Do you live in a cool area?

From what I’ve learned, they are pretty versatile with temperatures, but I will keep looking into that…
You did say you are living at the beach, in a previous posting, correct? I would be very hesitant putting this breed in a hot and humid climate, unless you are willing to keep it in a climate controlled area or allow it to share a swimming pool. And if there are children around only on the odd occasion, it could be a concern.

my neighbor had one of those dogs. nastiest thing i have ever met in my life. it is was left alone for 5 minutes it started yelping, whining, howling, crying, barking. then it attacked several dogs in our hood, causing the dogs to have stitches. when the owner died and his wife moved away and took the dog, we were all relieved. then she rented out the house and gave the dog to the renter so once again we were being terrorized by this awful thing, and sure enough, it attacked my cow dog and that was it. we made the tenant give the dog back to the widow. i’m sure they are good at their job, but you had better be careful with children and small pets. they are on par with bouvier de flandres — another awful breed in my opinion. one of my neighbors in the states had 4 of them for watchdogs. one of the dogs attacked my daughter when she was about 10. when i complained the guy scoffed and said “oh, it was just a little nip. if he wanted to, he could’ve taken off her arm.” i think the belgian shepherds have that same potential.
