I know I didn’t dream this, but wasn’t there a post yesterday regarding the recent murder of a couple in Jaco? I love Costa Rica, too, but I don’t love censorship.

There was and I deleted it.

I’ll leave the blood and guts stories to other websites…

Feel free to visit them if you wish.

Come on Scott you just published an article about censorship in American in the name of security. I’m sure we can handle the blood and guts. No matter how bad an article is I don’t think there should be censorship of any kind, perhaps a warning on the top to warn folks of its nature though and let the reader decide if they want to read it. I for one would have been interested in reading the Jaco thing.

There was no blood and guts. I was simply noticing that the couple that had been killed in Jaco (La Nacion Sept 25th) were the same couple that had been interviewed on this website. I was simply stating it was a tragedy. Nothing more.

Of course it is a tragedy and I know the people who found their bodies but – again – there are other online “news” sites in Costa Rica who LOVE to turn a small half a column ‘blood and guts’ article in La Nacion into the front page of their online “newspaper”.

And really… What is there to “discuss”? Without hurting the families and friends left behind?

What was even more hilarious was that in this morning’s online “news” site they said that:

“Unlike other English newspapers, XXXXXXXXXXXXXX does not take material from the Spanish papers to use in its own news stories. News stories written here are based on original sources.

For 10 years XXXXXXXXXXXXX editors resisted the temptation to steal news material from the local Spanish newspapers.”

Which is – to be blunt – such a load of laughable crap – total lies – that I nearly spat my tea out all over my screen this morning

Come on Scott – Give us a break! In the thread “Serial killers from Panama in Costa Rica?” there were 27 responses – 6 of them by YOU! Granted, several of your responses were to direct the reader to the wonderful investigation work and series of reports by the reporter from Panama, who admittedly has done more to further this investigation than anyone since Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein!
Tonight, when I sat down to read your diatribe (which was solely intended to criticize your morning competition) I did in fact “spat” my scotch onto my iPad!
News is News, and it is important for those of us that live outside of the Central Valley to know what is going on throughout the country, including other beach communities, whether you think so or not.
A great deal of the success of your web site is due to the folks that take the time to pose (and answer) the questions on subjects that many (most) of us are interested in, so I too find a problem with your selective “censorship”, and hope that you exercise more respect for ALL of your 17,000 members.
I have no problem with you posting a reply that discourages additional responses or criticizes the respondent (as you have done before and no doubt will do in response to this (my) response), that is the priviledge of those editors who have the last word.

We’re clearly two very different people costaricabill and I respect that but, there’s simply no way I would spit out a good single malt Scotch on an iPad, computer screen or on anything else for that matter…

What can I say? It’s the Scotsman in me…

Touche’
I am embarassed to say it happened, and also embarassed to say it was a ‘blend’. Had it been a fine spirit in the class of Macallan or equal I would have been much more careful!

Well said. That can apply to LOTS of media coverage, from any country, on any subject.

Now I must go and cancel my vacation to Florida, as I hear the icebergs will be arriving any day!

You can’t help but agree with Scott on this point, even today the main “morning’s online “news” site” has the story about the 320 ton engines for the new Garabito power plant on its front page which appears on page 8A of La Nacion or do we think that’s a coincidence? That they both wrote the same article the same night?

There are stories which are copied from La Nacion in there every week at least WeLoveCostaRica.com says it’s a story from la Nacion when important news is announced.

So…….Do we know anything of the details of this apparent crime? I wonder how someone would gain access to a high end condo, on the 7th floor without being noticed and commit a serious crime while leaving little evidence. Was this an assisted by someone with access to locked doors? I’m wondering was this condo gaurded by security gaurds? I just bought a nice property by the new hospital in Cortez and must admit, occurances such as these make me a little nervous, but also know, this happens everywhere in the world.
I do agree with posters stating no censorship is best.
