I enjoyed David Karr’s article about needing patience to survive the transition into life in Costa Rica and wanted to ask you what other “vital ingredients” do you think are necessary in order to settle comfortably in this little country?

An in depth understanding, respect and an appreciation for the people and their culture; and remember this is their home country not yours.

It can be difficult but ‘acceptance’ is important …

For better or for the worse, we are NOT going to change the ways the Ticos think and do things.

That may or may not happen over generations but, we can learn to accept them for who they are …

Hope that helps …

Patience IS the primary ingredient.

Dealing with any governmental agency or department is a challenge.

I can not count the number of times I have had to ask “¿alguien habla Inglés? Necesito un poco de ayuda.”
After five years things are getting much easier.

One of the most perplexing facts about Costa Rica is the way people drive. The automobile has the right of way, however if anybody gets hit, it becomes a nightmare for the driver. So somehow the connection has not made it to the brain. Perhaps things are changing with the new laws, of which even tailgating carries a fine. Another thing is Costa Rican’s are completely enamoured with their horns. Beep beep! 😀

I recently wrote this about places I’ve lived in a blog about the difference between there and CR.

“However the UK is just a puppet of the USA, and just as unsafe as the USA, I left it as well and now live in Costa Rica. No it’s not perfect here, but how often have you heard of school shootings here?

For that matter how often is Costa Rica in the news. I’m not going to extoll the virtues of CR. In fact I really don’t want most of you to come here – you’ll just bring what I’m getting away from. (Yes if CR turns out to be another US/UK I’ll leave it too). I’ve done my homework and I am very sure CR is the last place for me.”

I recently was in a place frequented by expats, and one said to me how lazy the Ticos are and went on, and on about what he didn’t like here.

He was also wearing a ‘I (heart) NY’ cap. I asked him he was from NY and he said Yes. “So why don’t you go back there?” His answer, “I can’t afford to.”

I’m reminded of the red neck saying during the Vietnam war – AMERICA – LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT, now I say, COSTA RICA – LOVE IT OR LEAVE IT.

Just call me a CR Redneck 😉

My wife and I have vacationed in Costa Rica 4 times and have always enjoyed it. We know we are not cut out for full time life there. My wife likes more golf.( and not expense golf as in Costa Rica) I want more tennis, but mostly we are type A’s. I am an active trader, a simple loss of price streaming on the the internet can send me into a cardiac arrest.

Will be back for vacation…
Joe
