After I log on and click on the Recent Forum Posts link, I am presented with a Forums page with a single, lonely, forum: Costa Rica Living Forum.
I would like to suggest that we need two additional forums: Politics and Religion.
Like many of you have recently expressed, I too believe that politics should be excluded from the main forum. So Scott, how about setting up separate forums for Politics and Religion for those members who seem to be addicted to non-Costa Rican topics.
Until the Intolerance in Canada? post, I don’t recall ever having seen religous-oriented posts here. Please give these people a slate of their own to vent their biases.

What a way to ruin a possible relationship!
May 4, 2010 at 9:42 pm #166794AndrewKeymasterMy mother used to tell me that one should not discuss sex, religion and politics at the dining room table …
But this is not the dining room table and no matter how hard we try to moderate, sex, religion and politics will creep into our Discussion because they are a big part of our lives, wherever we may live.
It would be great if we could all try to stick to the topic of the thread and not veer off on a tangent but isn’t that also what happens in real conversations?
Scott
PS. We will not be starting two new Forums…

I forgot about sex. However, what is your objection to having separate forums for Politics and Religion?
I am glad that you have joined this discussion.

Remember that most of the threads don’t start out about one of these “taboo” topics they evolve into them. Say we start talking about raising chickens in Guanacaste, before you know it we are talking about the oppressive farm policies of big Agra which will lead us directly to Obama, Queen Elizabeth and then Bill Gale peeing himself.:D
This same trajectory occurs on RE forums here in NYC as well.
May 4, 2010 at 10:32 pm #166797AndrewKeymasterThe objection is two fold:
One is “time” – Even though we have other moderators, there’s not enough time in the day to try and monitor one forum never mind three … And in this case it would be two “hot topics”
Secondly, a few years ago we did try having all the “hot topics” in a separate forum but it just didn’t work primarily because things rarely start out “hot” and controversial but often end that way …
Asi es la vida!
Scott

As long as participants don’t break any laws and avoid liable personal insults, I think there is no harm in talking things out. It is one thing to criticize a belief or position as unsubstantiated or ignorant, it is quite another to point those words at a person.
May 5, 2010 at 6:49 pm #166799kimballMemberIt is simple.
If you don’t like the topic DONT read it. There is plenty of useful info about non political and religious subjects here.
There could be a little more about sex though. 😀
