Hello, Been reading the forum for a while but despite my research I have not found a great source for weather histories that include anything other than a maximum and minimum for the day.
I am interested in knowing what kind of wind speeds and directions I can expect to find in the area around Culebra both right on the beach and inland. I am most interested in the two hours following Sunrise and two hours before Sunset. The key months are December through April.
If there is a good source I am missing I would sure appreciate someone pointing me to it or even better some firsthand local experience.

Hi Scott, Yup I tried all the usual stuff. Nothing I have found has any historical data regarding wind speeds at different hours of the day. Wind directions and speeds at sunrise and the following two hours as well as two hours preceding sunset.
It is very specific information that I need to finish off our business plan. We have been working with CINDE to bring in a new adventure business and they have no idea how to help with weather stuff.
The only reliable information will, in all probability, be solely up to you to gather.
The only “reporting” weather station in that area is Liberia airport (LIR) and unless you happen upon an amateur climatologist who keeps and records the information you want (for what purpose I can’t imagine) I’m pretty sure you are “SOL”.[quote=”costaricabill”]The only reliable information will, in all probability, be solely up to you to gather.

I knew I would have a hard time gathering the data I need. I am really trying to find out how hard the wind blows in the papagayo region during the dry season. Primarily the first two hours of the morning. I have read it can get windy but I am unsure it that is a 24 hour a day breeze or if the trade winds kick up later in the day.
I am trying to find a place that has very light morning breezes.

It sounds to me you may be considering a hot air balloon business….:roll:
The winds coming from the Miravalles volcano can be very strong, and I know from experience that it can blow and blow and blow … enough to feel that it will blow your house down…and not just the roof off … especially in Nov – March. We used to record the wind speed but the wind ruined the machine. A friend who was engineer, building the ICE facility in Guayabo de Bagaces said that the winds were in often in the 80-90 Kl. range. Possibly contact ICE as they may have some additional info. Also take into consideration that wind turbines are now in that area with many more in the ‘works’. These winds are felt in the Liberia and the beach

In the Papgayo area that you are considering, there are very strong north-northeasterly winds that develop every year in early January, known as the Papagayos, and blow almost constantly (night and day) for about six weeks to two months. These winds are generated by a weather pattern arising from the presence of Lake Nicaragua and tend to be much stronger than the NE Trade Winds that also blow at that time of year.

A balloon ride from Papagayo at that time of year may end up in Vanauatu!

Thanks for your help! I had suspected the better time of year would be during the wet season in Guanacaste. I have been following lite westerly winds there in the mornings with showers in the afternoon.
We will be there in November to survey various routes. Was hoping to be able to fly there year round but it does sound seasonal. Looking forward to the trip ( :
