I am fluent in Spanish and English. I have a FM2 visa for Mexico. Does Costa Rica require a teacher be a citizen or resident of that country/ And are there many english teachers jobs available?

I doubt that your Mexican FM2 visa will afford you any special treatment in Costa Rica.

In general, you must be either a Costa Rican citizen or a permanent resident to work legally here. However, if your employer helps you jump through the bureaucratic hoops, which are daunting, you may (may) be granted a work permit. The common wisdom is that obtaining a work permit takes as long as a year, and success is not assured.

There appears to be no shortage of bilingual teacher wannabes. What’s more, teaching, like every other job in Costa Rica, pays a laughably low wage, one you’re not likely to be happy with.

Before you make any commitments, look carefully into all the implications. You cannot just show up here, get a ninety-day tourist visa at the airport, find a job (if one exists) and expect to work legally.

Legally, one must have Permanent residency status as the previous poster already stated, to work or a have work visa, which is very hard to get. Especially, to teach English, as there are many people come here, thinking that they can enough to stay here. The salary is very low….even with a work visa.
With a US tourist visa you can stay for 90 days, then you are required to leave to renew your visa.

Some companies will set you up with an ESL certification to work up to 6 months in CR, Honduras, El Salvador and other Central American countries. BUT you must do it in the US before you travel. The pay is not great and some of the places you will be teaching are out in the BOONIES. Do your homework first and find out about these programs.

You will be under a contract from these US companies and work in a specific area in CR, them after 6 months you will have to leave. OR: get your residency and then post your resume as an ESL candidate.

Try the Peace Corps they have a 3 year program but you should apply 2 years before.

Read this article about a Deported teacher who quit her position, to change employers, who in turn failed to get her a work visa.

Note: This fully qualified teacher was hired to teach other subjects in English, not English, and I knew, personally, some of the teachers hired by CATIE in the past.

That my friend is 1 of 1,000 and not the norm, she was out of papers for 3 months and not by her fault.

What I explained is completely legal and if you follow the CR law this example does not apply.

A crack in the system??

Yes it does happen for anyone, regardless of status

Warren, this wasn’t in response to your response, and I understand what you wrote, but I was just pointing out to lbryan66 and other wannabe ‘teachers’ to realize that they can and will be deported and it’s not just the ‘fuddy duddies’ raining on their parade…

don’t let your dreams CRASH, chase them but within the legal parameters of the LAW in CR

I have a ESL certification and my part time job will be in CR after I retire in the USA

Teaching is not a job but a religion, you give knowledge to the uneducated but the pay is not reciprocated

If more people would just give than take we would not have Wall Street and the Dow Jones, just a better world where we would not have the want not and the have not

My wife is from Desamparados in CR and a teacher, she made the equivalent of $600.00 a month. I make that in 2 days of work in the USA

BUT, what gives you a greater satisfaction??

Teaching for pennies and giving or making $$$$

Treasure those that want to teach since they are PRICELESS

Do you remember your teachers in elementary school?? I do and all of them

GO for it, in whatever country you decide
