There are unfortunately severe drought conditions in many parts of the world which will mean higher prices in the not so distant future.
Just check out these [url=http://www.activistpost.com/2012/07/the-price-of-corn-hits-record-high-as.html]food inflation rates in the U.S.[/url] from last year….
Beef: +10.2%
Pork: +8.5%
Fish: +7.1%
Eggs: +9.2%
Dairy: +6.8%
Oils and Fats: +9.3%I’m assuming prices for those items here in Costa Rica rose at least that much …

This week on AG WEB they said beef will be up 10% more for next year due to the drought. 107 degrees here last Wednesday(Kansas City) Yesterday i saw a turtle crossing the road and he had a canteen strapped to his back. Around here you can’t give a rain gauge away.

I know we have gotten substantially less rain this year in Ciudad Colon. We’ll be installing a pump at the creek to help water our property and animals…as long as the creek lasts.

The family lives primarily on chicken and the prices have gone up about 50% depending on where you can find bargains. Lately it has been a lot of trocitos de pollo and that has gone from 1400 to about 2200 a kilo.

I hear ya. Here in Central NY, we normally have horrendous winters with at least 12 feet of snow, and humid, quite warm summers with enough rain. Last winter, we had only 40 inches of snow, milder temps and this summer… so unbearable! It’s like being in Liberia. It hit 101 last week with awful humidity, and that was within 1 degree of the all time high ever here. I can’t remember the last day we had anything more than a few sprinkles of rain. It is sunnny every day with no rain predicted. I know I could never live in sunny Phoenix. I miss the rain and my lush gardens. Guess that’s why I love Lake Arenal so much! Don’t get me going on food prices. I remember Marvilla posting her grocery bill one day. I can spend that on one bag of fruit here!
Too bad the people who lived through the ‘dirty thirties’ are mostly gone. I remember my mom and dad telling similar stories. My mom said that through those years they lived mostly on bags of dried beans from the township trustee. Meat? Her answer would have been, “What’s that?” My dad fared a bit better because he lived on a farm.
I have taken chicken off the shopping list completely (high prices, hormones and antibiotica levels !! ) bought a whole pork leg from a farmer for 1700 colones x kilo, that will last a few months. There is too much meet production world wide, better switch to more veggies and fruits, and meat only for special ocasions, just like our grandparents used to live. my kids great-grandpa died with 101 years, after a life full of hard work in the “campo” and natural healthy food produced on their own farm. And off course, a shot of “cacique” every once in a while 😉
did not mean to preach healthy lifestyles, but we are running out of water and running out of oil. I guess people will have to change their consumers habits pretty soon.
