Was wondering if this site could have a section with personal examples of nightmares and the names of people to watch for. Costa Rica is beautiful but it does have its share of con artists just waiting to pounce! Is there a legal reason we can’t give the “Heads up” to those planning on making the move?

Actually, there is a legal reason why one cannot name names in public. In Costa Rica, libel and slander are criminal offenses for which one could go to (a very unpleasant) prison.

Here, sadly, truth is no defense. Your builder could put your roof on upside down and refuse to correct the mistake, but if you go public and defame his reputation, even if he suffers no loss, you could still end up in the hoosegow.

If you search this discussion forum, you’ll find mentions of unpleasant encounters with builders and others, but you won’t find any names. “Mum”‘s the word.

If you feel strongly about this issue you could ‘PM’ the individual who is asking for information, and pass on your information, if you have had some personal and firsthand experience with this person, and not just based on internet gossip.

You can read about my experience after being charged with defamation and slander in the article;e link below ….

As happens everywhere, there are people who abuse the legal system to try and cause problems for others.

I posted a similar question which you can find at: https://www.welovecostarica.com/members/cfmbb/messages.cfm?threadid=B63D820A-24E8-5ED2-F13F299CFC64D62C

Be aware that what David says is absolutely true. Bad mouthing anyone in Costa Rica can present more problems that you can imagine. Any response should be by PM.

the original poster forgot to mention TENANTS!!!! there are plenty of those who are nightmares for the otherwise calm, sane, and professional property manager. were i to do it all over again, i would run background checks here and in the States on any gringo who wanted to rent a house i was managing. there are plenty of grifters in the tenant category who will make your life a living hell with their hidden agendas.

And some of the mangoes! Geeze, you get home with what you thought was the perfect mango; reddish orange, just the right amount of softness, and oooh tha heavenly heady mango scent….only to find out it’s all stringy! And don’t get me started on waterfalls! OK, so you hike through the jungle for ever, finally you can hear the roaring sound of water crashing in the jungle, and it’s HOT and Humid and your ready to peel of what cloths you still have on only to find that there’s no pool at the bottom! Just a beautiful cascade of water crashing onto rocks. This place drives me crazy!
Ok,now the Rainbows. THE friggin RAINBOWS!!!!……..
