Bringing my 21 year old daughter to CR for a week.
I have to decide whether to rent a car and do the loop (SJO – Arenal – monteverde – Manuel Antonio – SJO) or to fly to Osa and stay at an Eco Lodge. The cost is approximately the same… one vacation where we’re on the go (run) and don’t relax as much… the other where we don’t touch money or see cars or stores for a week and just become jungle~birds ourselves. I’ve done this and I prefer it! My daughter is 21 and doesn’t need the ‘club’ scene, but might like diversity of a road trip. so what is YOUR VOTE? a Road Trip or one-place-relax-and-see-tons-of-animals trip? She can’t decide either!

Secondly, what is the best Eco Lodge in Osa?

If you decide to do the Osa you might try the Marenco Rain Forest Lodge. You have to take a boat to it, it is a decent lodge for the price, and the staff is very good. You can go on several hikes in and around Corcovado or go out to Cano island for snorkeling. When deciding which to do you might consider when you are coming; if it’s during the rainy season the Osa could be taking a chance you might be rained in. You would have a little more flexibility if you were doing the drive trip.

Yes August is still the rain season, and they say it’s mostly afternoons and nights. anyone verify this? They say just sit and read while it rains, it doesn’t last all day. I know it would be dryer up north, it is a risk… but how bad can the rain be, and wouldn’t it still be an adventure? to be in the rainforest in the RAIN? Call me nuts.

From what I’ve observed and heard it is mostly afternoons and nights. Last time I was there we had a thunder and lightening storm that lit up the sky all night long; it was spectacular. I agree, I like the rain and if it won’t slow you down it would be a great adventure!

I have been to Costa Rica’s Central Valley West for the last two weeks. San Ramon, Grecia, Atenas, Palmares and others towns here.

The rainy season was not what I expected. Told to me is that during July, they have what we call, in North America, an Indian Summer. It was real pleasant. Not real wet as I had expected.

Partly cloudy in the morning with a beautiful sky, until about 14:00, then the rain starts. Most of the days it was rainy starting at that time and continued until I went to bed around 21:00, then awoke to another beautiful day.

We just returned from the Osa, and we have traveled to all the areas you mentioned. We have seen more animals in the osa, so that is my vote. We flew into Puerto Jimenez and took a back of a truck ride 1.5hours to Carate and stayed in the Look out Inn. It is simply amazing, 3 meals aday, amazing people stayed there also, we ended up hanging out with everyone, did tours with them and made lasting friendships. Check out there website: http://www.lookout-inn.com
And the hosts are great, made you feel like family.
Have a great trip, we definately will be heading back to that area..

    Thanks for your post,
I like the link to the inn, might stay there a few nights on our next CR trip. How did you like the rainy season in Carate? Did you feel a cooler breeze at night? My wife and I want to relocate to the Osa, so we need to check out the “green season” as well. Hopefully we can travel back there as soon as my new passport arrives and see some properties, which were offered for sale.

    Thanks again,

Hi, you have been to the exact places we are going to in Sept. Any further comments on them? We are very interested! Thanks

The Osa is truly the most amazing place we have ever visited. It is nature’s showcase and Puerto Jimenez is a fascinating town with extraordinarily friendly people. We stayed in a home that is less than 300 from the beach. It allowed us to make friends with local Ticos, gave us comfort and relaxation while not out taking in the beauty of the area, and was less expensive than renting a room in a lodge.
