My wife and I along with two other couples were in Costa Rica from September the 7th to the 14th. We and one of the two other couples are buying property and plan to build within the year and apply for residency. The trip was absolutely wonderful, at least up to our dinner at The Grano de Oro on the 12th. We had finished and leaving to get into our cab which was waiting for us. Three of us were still on the new stair case exiting when several voices were heard and a crow of young men came running up chasing an other young man. Of the pursuers had a large chunk of rock and was trying to bash the fellow that was being chased, which they caught just feet from the Hotel entrance. The tugs ganged up on the target and they took his shoes. We also noted that another of the thugs had what looked like a Buck Knife. They left their pray shaken up and very lucky not to of suffered any more than humility. Their were at least five hotel employees including the cab driver, who all choose to ignore the activity. Our friends and I yelled at the bunch and I started to leave the cab, but fortunately for me it was over and everyone took off before I could get my behind out the door. I have seen this and much worst in LA, Seattle and etc., but it was a reality check to see it in what I almost felt might have been paradise.
Sorry to hear that especially outside one of my favorite hotel/restaurants. Good to hear that you were not hurt and that the young man only managed to lose his shoes….

Your story wasn’t all that surprising unfortunately – both the act and lack of response from those around. Its a story you hear way to often. Criminal acts committed in full view of others with little or no reaction.
I hope that event doesn’t turn you off of Costa Rica, but like you say it is your ‘reality check’. It may be beautiful here, with nice weather and generally nice people, but you must be careful.
