Hi
I could bring our own computers with us but was considering renting a laptop once in awhile so we could travel as light as possible for the first 3 mo’s or so. Any suggestions as to a company handling that in CR. No problem with credit card deposit etc.
Thanks MichaelDecember 18, 2006 at 9:51 am #180417GringoTicoMemberIn lieu of renting a laptop (which may or may not be possible in CR, I don’t know), you might consider simply stopping in at one of the hundreds of internet cafes there. You’ll find them all over the country, as purchasing computers and internet access are too expensive for the masses.
If you can avoid bringing your own laptop, definitely don’t. The likelyhood of damage and/or theft is very high, and even if nothing happens to it, you’ll spend your time worrying about it (as you should).

Even if you had a laptop, wifi outsde of the San Jose is very hard to find so then you would have the problem of trying to find a connection to the internet.
Visit an internet cafe and you’ll pay about $1 per hour which is a helluva lot cheaper than any laptop rental you’ll find.

How realistic is it that I could really handle all business (bill paying etc. as well as family contacts) using internet connections at public sites?

Most Internet cafes have high-speed connections and computers adequate for the job. They may not have the very latest hardware but then you could do what’s needed with anything that’ll run Windows.
By the way, the threat of theft is very real. We have a friend who was held up at gunpoint yesterday as he was getting off the bus in La Uruca. The robbers took his backpack because they thought he had a laptop in it but left him his wallet! Go figure . . .

1- better buy a USB memory stick for data you realy need. All computers have USB.
2- make a kind of “code-card” with passwords which only you can read and undertand in case you loose it. So you will not loose acces to important sites. You can also put personal info on the USB-stick which only you can understand. Be creative…
3- LEAVE THE LAPTOP AT HOME. Safer for you….. and your laptop.Have a nice time in Costa Rica.
