The San Jose Airport has the worst exchange rates, even the U.S. airports have better rates than SJO. Best bet ATMS or Banks in CR.

I’ve noticed that the banks have different rates for converting to colones and different service charges. Might pay to shop around if you’re going to be there a lot and need to use the ATM often. Also, I’ve found that some of the machines will only let me take out small amounts at one time. I think it’s 100,000 colones per transaction. But if I reinsert my card it will allow me to take out anonther 100,000 (about $200 USD) etc. Some will only allow me to withdraw once and that’s it.

The Central Bank posts daily exchange rates of all the different financial entities on its website at:

    http://www.bccr.fi.cr/flat/bccr_flat.htm

Click on the first big box at the top that says:

“Tipo de cambio del dólar de los Estados Unidos de América anunciado en ventanilla por las entidades participantes en el Mercado Cambiario En colones costarricenses por dólar de los Estados Unidos de América”
