I’m flying down to Costa Rica tomorrow and will be traveling mostly between Alejuela, Arenal, and the Carribean. I like to buy fresh fruits grown by local farmers. What fruits are good this time of year? Is there anything I should especially look out for? I’m up for some experimentation.

Phew! The list is very long…
Papayas are healthy for you and I eat all the seeds too which is great roughage however the problem is there are dozens of varieties and for my taste I tend to prefer the smaller ones.
You might try grenadillas which are small oval shaped fruit with an hard eggshell like outer coating with lots of seeds inside which have a sweet pulp around them, they are truly revolting to look at and you know where the ‘alien’ movies get their ideas from but they are delicious.

Mangoes will soon be in season! Eat all you can. And drink lots of coconut water called agua de pipa!!!
When you’re in Limón look for someone on the side of the road selling guanabana. It’s out of this world. If you want to know where cashews come from, buy a marañon. Better to make juice with this – it’s taste is too strong straight. If you’re very adventurous, you might also try a zapote or an anona, but these fruits are extremely rich as well to eat straight.
Anyone know if mangosteen and noni are in season now????
