I would like to bring my cat with me when I relocate +- 1 1/2mos. any assistance on where to start…I want to eliminate the quarantine if possible. Thanks, Mariposa
Mariposa, I’m assuming that you’re coming from the United States.
There should be no quarrantine issue in Costa Rica if you play by the rules, dot all the “i”s and cross all the “t”s.
Your cat will require up-to-date vaccination(s) (rabies, at least, maybe others) and an International Health Certificate from your vet which is then endorsed by the USDA’s state vet who is in your state capitol. If you go to the Costa Rican American Embassy website, there should be a link that explains all this. There are timeframe requirements for the vaccinations, the International Health Certificate and the USDA vet’s endorsement, so you need to get it right.
You must also check carefully with the airline to see what restrictions they impose.
I’m in the same boat…2 small dogs & cat. I am dealing with Delta, flying out of IL. Make sure you address temps cause flying out of Midwest the temp has to be just right. If it’s under (I think) 45 they will not take the pets unless you have letter from vet (special name..forget) stating pet can withstand temps to 32 (or close to). But if it is below 32 they will not fly the animal. Period.
Also, check rabies shots. I don’t think Costa Rica recognizes 3 yr rabies, plus I think last rabies cannot be within 30 days of flight.
There was a discussion on bringing pets to CR recently that is quite detailed. I brought 3 cats and a puppy 3 months ago and had no issues. You can do a search on the site for entire thread. Buena suerte.
Please refer to the thread that Mediatica mentioned. I’ve gone crazy trying to figure this nightmare out, so maybe we can save you some headaches. I just got my dog’s health certificate today and it was faxed to the USDA. Now I’m waiting for them to tell me it was done correctly so I can take them the original to sign. Thankfully, we don’t have to put our 20-pound human in a dog suit in cargo. He gets to ride in the cabin with us!
