does anyone have experience with bringing pit bull terriers into costa rica? Someone I know said they are not allowed- is that true and why? I have seen these dogs before in the country.
What agency do I contact for information? THANKSjust because you´ve seen those dogs in country doesn´t mean you can bring them in, and i do believe that when i was researching bringing our dog to costa rica that i came across some info that also indicated they were not allowed. please check with the USDA veterinary services department and they should be able to tell you definitively if you can in fact import pit bulls.
I think Maravilla is right, I have been unsuccessfully searching for a source for you but vaguely recall that there is a list of dogs that are considered ‘dangerous’ that cannot be imported.

WeLoveCostaRica.comThe U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) would be the U.S. source to check, but I’d also check with Costa Rican Customs. They (Customs) will be the ones allowing or disallowing the importation.
Deserved or not, these dogs have a questionable reputation. If that reputation is well founded, you should not be surprised that their importation is restricted.
When your veterinarian completes the APHIS International Health Certificate, s/he will have to state the dog’s breed and certify that information. It may be difficult to obscure just what breed of dog it is you’re bringing in.

i think i saw the prohibition list of dogs to import on the ministerio de salud website for costa rica. it was written in spanish, but i do recall seeing a list of dogs that were not allowed, so if you can find that website, i would check there, or with the usda.
