Hi Terry Cook here…does anyone know about the city/area of Golfito? located on Golfo Dulce, Any and all information would be great. Reason for the question is possibly buying a house to retire.
Not looking for anything fancy but cheap and simple Tico style is fine.
thanks

We’ve got coconuts, bananas, oranges, carambolas, and other exotic fruits whose names I cannot spell. The monkeys come in the rainy season and swing from tree to tree looking for fruit. We paid $125,000 from a tico. Two years prior it was for sale for about $60,000. We thought it was high at the time, but as a result of some building down the road, we could probably get $250,000. You probably know the website (removed) owned by Dave Corella. Dave showed us that property and we highly recommend him. We had our eyes on another property for $60,000, but it fell through. Development is coming, but slowly- to Golfito – megaprojects with expensive condos and new marina. We won’t be moving down there for 5 years – we just go and visit and stay in the house. We have a young man living there. We love Golfito but we realize that there is a lot of poverty and a lot of crackheads and are concerned about security over time. But so far it is muy tranquilo. We closed on it last June – we still don’t have a phone and cell phones don’t work because there’s a mountain behind us. You can also try Rio Claro (more mainstream it seems) and Ciudad Neilly. I am sure you will find inexpensive properties there.

I am now in the position of needing to rent and make a base then find locals where I can find one of those real deals as money will be real tight for me thanks to my soon to be ex-wife. There was a country western song a few years ago that fits perfectly…she got the gold mine and I got the shaft. But really thanks for all the information it really shows how good this site of Scotts is for all of us.

I have not been a fan of Golfito because it appears to be pretty rough around the edges, as others have posted. The good news for you is that affordable housing is available *all* over Costa Rica, so you might do well to spend some time touring around to find a place in what many would consider a more desirable neighborhood/community. Doing some Costa Rica internet searches you will find Tico priced houses everywhere. Even better, consider building yourself to save money and get brand new digs. If you speak spanish there are brand new pre fab home companies (search this site) that will put up nice house – relatively quickly – on your land. One could easily have a basic, but nice and new, 2-3 bedroom home on a non-view acre or two for around $75,000 out of pocket. If you choose your community well, your property could instantly double in value upon completion. Good luck!

thanks terry -
