We have been living in Guanacaste for 6 months and last nights first thunderstorm of the year led to a total blackout for hours, which was made worse because we were suffering from a Costa Rican stomach virus at the same time!.
WE now want to buy a back up generator for our house and a water tank and have them installed ASAP. We are going to be in San Jose on Sunday for 4 days and are hoping to get the generator then. Can any one recommend somwhere reliable we can go and buy one at a good price?

    Many thanks

Google – Costa Rica ‘Planta de luz Gasolina’ – and you’ll find a few listings…

I have looked around for generators. Last time I was there EPA had three or four models. You’ll find two EPA stores one in San Pedro (the east end of San Jose) near the University. The second is in Santa Ana / Escazu. Each store is well advertised as you get near it. They’re just like a Home Depot with most of the same products at maybe 20% or 30% more than US.

Did you try the Do It Center in Papagayo? You will find them in EPA or PRiceSmart. If they don’t have them you can special order them. I have seen them many times in PriceSmart.

I can’t tell you where to get them but the newest emergency generators sold in the U.S. are now propane powered. This has a great advantage in that fuel does not go bad setting in the tank AND you may need or have use of the fuel directly for cooking. Propane is readily available in CR. I also don’t know about bulk tank refills however. Probably depends on where you are.

There are a couple of companies in Costa Rica which will deliver large tanks to your home on an exchange basis. You buy the tank with the first fill of gas, then you just swap tanks thereafter.

Yesterday’s Tico Times had two full-page ads (by the same company) for generators. Some are portable, gasoline-fired ones; the others are propane-fired and would require fixed installation. They’re all U.S. brands.
