I’ll be making my move to CR soon and am wondering if there’s any change in the rate of street crimes against women? Is it still unsafe to wear any jewelry when in the cities?
It’s not safe to wear jewelry in ANY city anymore. Leave it at home. Why make yourself a target for petty thieves whether you are in Denver, NYC, Chicago, or San Jose? When I went to San Jose to get fingerprinted, I was warned not to even wear earrings because there were women who had had them snatched right out of their ears. That was enough for me. It’s just not worth the risk.

Darn Maravella, quite the alarmist are you not! I certainly hope you have an escape route out of the fully barred casa you live in.
Marcia, wearing jewelry (espescially $$$) would not be a good idea should you plan to stroll Avenue Central, shop El Mercado etc. But can you put on a nice piece or two and go to Cafe Mundo and have dinner? Yes, Be smart and remember your enviroment, No need for bling in CR on a daily basis.
Suggest you leave your treasured jewelery in a box stateside.

Thank you very much for your reply. I was referring mostly to costume jewelry and not diamonds, gold, etc. I guess I’ll be conservative which is my style anyway. I’ll see what the other ladies do and follow suit. Thank you again.
If the wife of a supreme court judge tells me that wearing jewelry in San Jose puts you are risk for being robbed, I think it is only prudent to take her advice. I don’t live in a gated community or in a house with bars, but I have lived in other third world (or developing) countries besides Costa Rica and the number one rule is DON’T WEAR GOOD JEWELRY! A women is not likely to get robbed wearing costume stuff that is obviously NOT real or expensive, but bling is a potential hazard, whether you are a man or a woman. That’s good advice, not paranoia. I’ve been robbed at gunpoint in NYC, but thankfully he only wanted cash for drugs and not all the good jewelry I was wearing. Not a pleasant experience and one that is easily avoided by being cautious.
