Someone told me it is advisable to get these preventative shots prior to visiting CR. Does anyone know if this is necesary? Further – is it recommended for a US person to get any shots at all prior to coming?

This question is best posed to your local public health department — city or county government. They are kept current by the U.S. Centers for Disease Prevention and Control on which immunizations are required and which are recommended on a country-by-country basis worldwide. The health department number is in your local phone book.
You can probably get up-to-date information on-line, as well, from the official CDCP website.
You should also know that the required and recommended immunizations do change from time to time, so it’s not a bad idea to revisit the question before every visit.

We have visited Costa Rica 7 times (from Canada) and never had any shots of any kind. Hep A can be contracted anywhere, from someone that is carrying the disease and there was a recent case here in Canada where a worker in a local restaurant passed on the disease to patrons. Hep B is transmitted through body fluid contact, such as blood contact or intercourse.
Although I would agree that these innoculations are not necessary, the shots are not expensive and can be administered in as little as three weeks. May be a safe bet.

Total cost of 4 shots was $143 US dollars.
The shots are not necessary, but I went ahead and got four shots yesterday. Hep. A&B, Typho. and a Td. I will have to get another Hep. B in 30 days (before I leave) and then one in six months when I get back, but my thoughts are that having the shots frees me to travel on short notice to interesting places and they might help even in the US.

While one’s exposure to hepatitis, typhoid, typhus, diptheria, polio, and maybe others may not be very great, the consequences, should the odds not favor you, are dire indeed. I’m with Jerry. For the costs involved, why not cover all the likely bases?
And don’t overlook tetanus. It’s probably your most likely exposure.
