Hi,
Has anyone been able to transfer funds from a US bank to a local bank here using just the internet to manage your accounts?
I have a bank of america account which I want to use to transfer funds to a local bank account here.
Thanks.
ibarnon
This is easily done depending on the bank… You may need to verify the email or send in a signed fax but this is normally a very simple process after you have established your accounts. What’s not so simple is opening the actual bank account in Costa Rica especially if you are an American.
I have never used them but Western Union also have big operations here

I do this every several months with no problem except that my Costa Rican bank requires that I change my password every 60 days. To bank via internet is called “afiliarse” in spanish.
I send money regularly to C.R. from Canada using Western Union. It’s expensive at $75 per pop. I gave my daughter a bank card and she uses that in C.R. I have never added up the charges but I think it might be less expensive than the Western Union option.
Ibarnon, this isn’t a direct answer to your question; however, we have been successful in writing a check on our U.S. checking account and depositing it in our dollar account at HSBC (nee Banco Banex). Of course, you have to be in Costa Rica to make this happen.
The most cost effective way I’ve found to get money to Costa Rica from Canada is to use xetrade.com. They provide a much better exchange rate than the banks and after they do the exchange they wire the money directly to my Scotiabank account in Costa Rica for about $14.00. The cost of the wire is the same regardless of the amount of money you wire. Setting up an account at Scotiabank only took about 30 minutes.
If you do banking in your country by internet, and you do the internet banking here by internet (for example BNCR) it is very easy. Use the SWIFT code and transfer the money, BNCR charges $ 10,– for the transfer (any amount).
Genincr, could you tell me more about it? To wire, I have to go to my bank in Canada and sign the papers, with the swift number of my BNCR. What do I need to do that directly on internet, and what are the costs of your canadian bank ?
Thanx Jo
I opened a Citibank account by mail. $30 to wire over the internet plus $10 from BNCR. If you wire early in the day you will get the funds the same day at BNCR. Deposited a Citibank personal check at BNCR cleared in 8 calender days.
