If I buy a unlocked quad band gsm phone in the states, can I buy a prepaid sim card in CR to use with this phone?
Thanks,
Tom
The unlocked GSM phone mentioned will work in Costa Rica, keep your receipt (Proof of purchase) for the phone as they may require it when you get your Costa Rica SIM card if you do not already have one.
Prepaid SIM cards are not available here yet. So you may have to rent a cell phone here depending on your plans.

Is there a black market for SIM cards. I know a rental company can put a rented SIM card in a renter’s phone. I have to belive they are for sale by unscrupulous entrepenuers.
Just asking…I am not looking to buy.
I have my Moto RAZR from AT&T to use if I want to pay the $2.27/minute rate.
I am trying to figure this out too. My T-mobile Razr has been unlocked to be able to use in Costa Rica. From what I understand, I have to purchase an international (or Costa Rica) sim card to be able to use there. Will I be able to purchase the sim card there? It does not have to be pre-paid. Can I purchase it in the states before I go?
Help….I am going in 2 weeks for 2 weeks and I don’t want another $400.00 phone bill!!
Did you ever figure this out? I leave for Costa Rica in three weeks. Thank you.
You cannot get a pre-paid sim card to use with your own phone at this time. I understand that may change in the future, but for now, nope. The only thing I could do was call from a regular phone from there with one of their phone cards. My wife had no way to get ahold of me except to send an E-mail via someone to give a message to me! I was able to use my T-mobile phone to call her at ridiculous rates. ($1.40 minute) but we would speak for 2 minutes!! If she called me then I would have been charged not only the $1.40 min but also roaming charges AND whatever it cost for her to call me from home. Therefore, I could only call her from my cell at that high rate OR just use one of their phone cards. Definately a pain. I rented a cell phone there once, but it was just way too much. I will say this though, my T-mobile phone was just as clear from there as it is at home.
Does anyone know if the pre-paid SIM card is available here in Costa Rica now? If it’s availalbe, how can I get it to use with my own phone? I’m getting different information online as some websites says it’s available but some say no. Thanks.
