I was just reading the post about the the guy and his wife wanting to move to CR on a $1,500 monthly budget. He said he was just starting his research and i would like to know what are the best books to buy regarding Costa Rica and living here?

I like ‘Living Abroad in Costa Rica’ by Erin van Rheenen which you can find at [ http://www.amazon.com/Moon-Living-Abroad-Costa-Rica/dp/1598800078 ]

I will 2nd Scott’s recommendation, however, it is a bit outdated with respect to immigration laws unless there is a newer version than 2004. Another good book is The Golden Door to Retirement and Living in Costa Rica by Christopher Howard, also on Amazon (our Seattle based company).

I agree. Christopher Howard updates that book every year. I believe the 15th Edition is the most recent. He also runs a pretty good website. So as not to insult Scott, it is not a matter of what is better. You need an all around perspective. AM Costa Rica is run by an older gentleman, that tends to be more conservative and that explains why he promoted the Costa Rican Real Estate Crash. He means well.

“The Ticos: Culture and Social Change in Costa Rica”
by by Mavis Hiltunen Biesanz, Richard Biesanz and Karen Zubris Biesanz

This book is a bit dated even though it was published in 1999 but gives you an idea about why the Ticos are the way they are. Knowing the people is as important as knowing the country. Friends who have lived in CR, worked and done business with the Ticos for over a decade said that the book gave them some more insight into the people. I found the book very good and worth reading more than once.

This, Scott’s book on realestate (and more) plus a Lonely Planet travel guide are the top of a VERY short list.

    Dear grb1063:

I read on the Internet that Amazon plans to start selling soon in Costa Rica. Boy, that sure makes my day. Did you see anything in the Seattle newspapers or media about this business expansion? I hope it is true, now if I could only convince Trader Joe’s to build one store on the east side of San Jose and one on the west, then my move to the Orosi Valley would be perfect. Believe I have tried to interest Trader Joe’s headquarters in this idea, but so far, no response.

Tom on a budget in Portland.
