Does anyone know anything about Richard Provost and his company “Sold 300?” I have been told that he is a Canadian who imports building supplies, everything from doors and windows to bath tubs and jacuzzis from the US and Canada and then sells them cheap from a warehouse in the Sabana Park area. Is he legitimate?

I paid him almost $20,000 several months ago for materials for my new house. What I received in return was some cheap cabinets half of which were infested with, and eaten by, termites, some cheap fans which I do not need and one jacuzzi tub. I have been chasing the man for about three months. He has promised to either supply what I ordered or make a refund but every time I try to pin him down he runs. He told us recently that he’s involved with a partner in some new development so you’ll probably be hearing more about this man. Meanwhile does anyone have any suggestions about a way to stop him swindling more people? He’s from St. Catherines Ontario, has a wife from Nicaragua and together they have a small showroom on the road that goes from Sabana Park down to the U.S. Embassy. Along with his “business” they also sell cheap plastci jewelry and cosmetics. It’s right opposite a little Turkish take out called “Donner Kebabs” or something like that. Yes, I know about Richard Provost had I wish I had never met him.

So it’s safe for us to assume then that you are not presently recommending him to all your friends?

Wish I could because his service, if indeed he had one, would have been great. He’s not the first con-man that has taken me in Costa Rica. But I think I’ll be better prepared in the future. Meanwhile does anyone have any suggestions as to how he can be stopped from swindlig others? Does Migration care for instance?
December 3, 2008 at 1:37 pm #193815maravillaMemberWhat are you NOT doing that has allowed you to be swindled MORE than once? Didn’t you check this guy out? Did you look at the products he said he would order? I’m sorry to hear that you lost so much money. Twenty grand isn’t chump change when you’re building a house! And I doubt Migracion gives two hoots about this guy unless he is there illegally, and do you know that?
December 3, 2008 at 9:34 pm #1938162bncrMemberI think Provost is a friend of Gary Morris of Pacifico Colonial fame and now of Lomas de Coronado. He swindled his best friend, a doctor from Santa Barbara, and used the money to buy property and never contacted him again. I know because his friend contacted my attorney and my attorney asked me about him since Morris walked out on many bills he owed in Quepos/Manuel Antonio and was investigated by the owner of Pacifico Colonial when the budget went fron 1.75 million to almost 4 million. Two peas in the same pod. Don’t trust either of them.
December 3, 2008 at 9:46 pm #193817DavidRushtonMemberSo what can be done to get him jailed or at least prevent others from getting caught?
Any ideas?December 3, 2008 at 9:56 pm #1938182bncrMemberKeep people informed about these types. What you need to do is preventitve investigation. Find attorneys or consultnats that have the means and knowledge to chek people out. Look, if you are going to hand over 20K to someone, at least have a credit check done and get some history on them, like thier pp# and current address. With a photocopy of thier passport you at least have their picture and some info that leads back to their home country. I can never understand why people are so quick to hand over large amounts of money but are to cheap to pay for an insurance policy (investigation).
December 4, 2008 at 12:30 pm #193819crhomebuilderMemberThere is no yellow brick road in Costa Rica. Do your homework just as you would do anywhere else. Before you purchase construction materials or hire unknown workers, seek recommendations from a trusted Construction Inspector who has conducted business here since 1992 at, https://www.welovecostarica.com/members/department62.cfm.
December 13, 2008 at 10:44 pm #193820DavidRushtonMemberLooks like Richard Provost has closed up and run off back to Canada or Nicaragua or somewhere. The shutters have been down on his rental location all week. I hope he never comes back even though he’s stolen my $20,000.
April 9, 2009 at 2:58 pm #193821mrjoedMemberI’ve dealt with Gary Morris in the past and he didn’t make a second payment agreed on for services I provided, which I spend a lot of time on. It wasn’t very big and I can easaly write it off, but it’s the principal of the thing. I don’t like people welshing on an agreement. Do you have any more ammo on the guy that can be used to pressure him into giving me the money he owes? No idea who Provost is – guys like that come and go.
April 11, 2009 at 1:04 pm #1938222bncrMemberGary Morris is now associated with Lomas Coronado in Puerto Cortes. Watch out. This guy has no personal honesty what so ever. Don’t trust him.
April 11, 2009 at 1:31 pm #193823mrjoedMemberThat’s pretty vague. Morris seems to be working in Quepos and around Cortes, so obviously some people trust him. Can you tell me anything more?
April 11, 2009 at 1:31 pm #193824AndrewKeymasterThis is no comment on Gary Morris, I do not know him but one of my pet peeves is visiting websites (like the Lomas Coronado site) that gush about how much experience they have, in this case: “Our professional sales team from the United States and Canada has over 50 years experience successfully doing business in Costa Rica” but fail to mention the name of one single human being who’s involved or what sort of experience.
