On Friday, February 20th, I offered to take my friend and his Tico Girlfriend to dinner. They suggested Pizza at La Fabbrica.
I was stunned that dinner cost 45,000 colonies. That’s $80 bucks for 2 cheese pizzas and a plate of pasta. Oh, and 4 beers and a soda.
Help me out here. Did I receive the special “Gringo” menu reserved for stupid American?

I think this is the same place Scott mentioned in an article having to do with a very poor exchange rate when paying in dollars isn’t it? I hope you at least paid in colonies… otherwise the meal was even more expensive than you thought!
As for the price…. sure sounds like the gringo/tourist menu landed on your table when you walked in! It’s a shame that places take advantage of folks like this… or perhaps they figure now that Domino’s closed up shop and ran that they’re the only game in town! 🙂
With the tourism slowdown let’s hope that places like this become a bit more aware of the economy and change their ways. After that a cure for cancer, war, and world hunger should be a piece of cake!

La Fabrica is not the only game in town. Truth be told, PriceSmart offers pretty good American-style pizza. You can’t get a beer, and the ambiance leaves a little to be desired (no checkered tablecloths or candles in chianti bottles), but the price is (sorry) a whole lot smarter.
If you eat at the restaurants on the “Strip” in Escazu you are going to pay crazy prices. I for one no longer do so… there are many fine restaurants all over the valley where you can enjoy excellent meals for reasonable prices in a comfortable ambiance. As for a “gringo” menu I have never been aware of such a thing in almost 10 years here… however in getting price quotes on products and services that is another story… just don’t take the first price quoted if you feel your are being “gouged” and get several quotes. You will only be taken advantage of if you let yourself be.
Have a great weekend and venture off the strip for great food at fair prices.

sorry to disagree with you but comparing pricesmarts pizza with la fabrica pizza is like comparing me to john holmes lol

Johnny Holmes had a nicer smile! As for pizza… more expensive isn’t always better… with the money you save at Pricesmart on the main course you can afford some pretty nice dessert! 😉
Google him Scott…. put on your goggles and step back from the screen. Then try not to feel too silly or inadequate.
hrichards, how can I compare you to Johnny Holmes (whoever he is) unless a Google search turns you up, too?
As for the La Fabrica-PriceSmart comparison, all I can say is that any (absolutely ANY) $80 pizza would taste like ashes in my mouth. I don’t care if I got it in Italy and it was served by the Pope.
PriceSmart’s I can swallow and feel good about.
Hey David easy with the Pope! lol. If you get to Jaco Rio Oasis has a pretty good pizza, me thinks better than Wishbone.
For those who really like a good pizza(I ate at Patsy’s original Harlem location last night! yum!!) Buy a pizza stone and do it at home, very easy and tasty! You can often just buy the dough from a local pizzeria or make a few batches and freeze it. I season crushed tomatoes, use straight from the can, mozzarella and your favorite toppings. Make sure to preheat the oven with the stone inside. You can use a metal mesh pizza holder to put the stretched out dough on, then drop slide that onto the stone if you don’t want to deal with a peel.
After you Google John Holmes, you gonna feel awful silly about that “swallow and feel good about it” comment.
For those of you on the East side, try the Pizza Pasta across the street from the Mas X Menos in Sabanilla. It is excellent. We get a loaded up large (familiar) and it only costs 7200 colones. Jerry
Sucky that people get taken advantage of like that… we ordered two pizzas from Pizza Hut and two orders of breadsticks and got stuck with about a $50 tab. Needless to say, last time we will be ordering from Pizza Hut.
One thing that helps, I have found, is to try to speak Spanish. I don’t mean like Por Favor, I’m saying get some lessons or a private tutor and put forth some effort. Remember how annoying it was in the States when immigrants didn’t even bother to try to speak english? Plus Ticos will really try to help you if you put forth the effort.
