CR has the second highest rate of stomach cancer due to toxic pesticides being used on the crops? Fact or fiction?
I do not believe it, but…..
BrianI did a lot of research on this about a year or so ago and discovered that Costa Rica uses an ENORMOUS amount of pesticides but, what they did not specify in the vast majority of the articles was “who” uses all those pesticides?
The biggest culprits by far are the American multinationals who grow fruit here…

BrianThere is speculation that the high incidence of stomach cancer may be due to the fact that coffee that is roasted with sugar is carcinogenic.
There are a few popular brands of coffee that are roasted with sugar, which causes the bean to become black and shiny, like a french roast bean.
I’ve been told that none of the export quality involves this, so it it is all meant for local consumption.I am also concerned that the local farmers and farm workers do not understand the consequences of using pesticides and herbicides. The several I know use this stuff quite a bit. For them it is a no brainer..they measure how much work is involved clearing out weeds and grasses for an area to be cultivated with a machete and compare that work to the minimal effort involved in walking around with a sprayer in hand to do the same task. It seems that the back pack pesticide containers are as ubiquitous as machetes and rubber mud boots in farm workers’ homes.
These last 2 posts are of concern. Does anyone know of any organic market or movement in CR.

Yes, all those chemicals are harmful, no doubt, but when it comes specifically to stomach problems many people are not aware that bacteria are causing their gastritis, ulcers, cancer…Please look up Heliobacter Pylori.
I can not explain why so little is known about this, and why there is no huge campaign in raising public awareness. Unfortunately, many physicians don’t consider a simple lab test even when patients are reporting persistent symptoms for long time, yet accurate diagnostics and antibiotic treatment are available.
Please get tested if you have symptoms, and P L E A S E spread the word: most likely someone you know-your family member, friend, co-worker, neighbor…is affected. Bacteria are wildly spread among certain ethnic groups, including Latino, which is another reason I am so compelled to post this information here…
Pura vida!Organic Farming is slowly started to catch on here. You can purchase organic fruits and vegetables the grocery store.
My wife and I are dying laughing at you guys! You really don’t know the history of Costa Rica!! Do a search on Dole or Chiqita banana and Costa Rica, you will find some surprising stuff that happened in the 80s.
Also my wife worked for IICA in Costa Rica for many years as a Economist creating relations with ISO and organic farming in Costa Rica. She would suggest you don’t drink the coffee that is for local consumption. If you do than drink Coffee Brit or Coffee Rea.
it´s not just the pesticides that are causing stomach cancer as the other poster pointed out. there are several factors that come into play — the h.pylori baceria, which is very prevalent and rarely treated here, high consumption of sugar and omega 6 vegetable oils, coffee roasted with sugar (cafe labeled 100% puro is not). japan has the highest stomach cancer rates in the world. costa rica is number two.
Just a question on a serious note, what is the IICA doing for the working poor on plantations in CR, aside from ISO 14000?
