based on this year’s low economy, I suggest you make reservations for next season now and do some trial-and-error rentals. If you have the two full months, go to multiple locations for a week or two each. Say maybe central west coast (Jaco/Estorillos); North west coast (Liberia y beaches); and carribean side (Cahuita & Puerto Viejo).
Don’t buy ubtil you see what/where you like best and find the right property ot get into. Get scott’s book and get a good abogado and preferred realtor.

I would go with the Los Suenos Resort, it has a golf course, marina, beachclub, restaurants and shopping, it will definitely provide you with the resort feel.

I would recommend Flamingo,Manuel Antonio,Tamarindo,Dominical areas and Cahuita,Limon…and do not forget to read Scott’s book “How To Buy Costa Rica Real Estate Without Losing Your Camisa” and use recommended real estate specialist from this this site.

The two largest resort communities in Guanacaste are Reserva Conchal (2300 acres with golf course, $12 Million Beach Club and all-inclusive resort, fronting Playa Conchal) or Hacienda Pinilla, which features 4500 acres, the new JW Marriott, beach club under construction and championship 18 hole golf course. Los Suenos is nice too just north of Jaco. There are some great deals on rentals this season and we manage some resort properties as well.

I would also read Chris Howard’s book and Phil Baker’s Costa Rica Now which covers the differnt regions of Costa Rica and has a section on the culture and a section on real estate rules. Both books are around 500 pages. Both are on the web.

vrbo dot com (vacation rentals by owner) has hundreds of luxury homes for rent in Costa Rica at prices often same or less than resorts in the same areas – many with perks you might like including privacy and personal services. Have a look!
