My fiance (a Tica)and i plan to live in the USA for the next 5 yrs or so. Eventually we might want a small place with a few hectares with a Tico house near Heridia. I am sure she would know but i thought i would ask. Will there being any real safety concerns for a gringo living out in the campos? I know that some of the safety concerns that i read about are over blown.
I just don’t want to be in any gringo community or even in the city.June 17, 2009 at 2:16 pm #196624AndrewKeymasterWe had a home in the very rural area in the mountains of Costa Rica for a few years and never had any problem of any kind and never had anything stolen or damaged. We only visited at weekends but we hired a local man Julio from a nearby family (of 12 grown sons and 2 daughters) to maintain the garden during the week and keep an eye on things… None of these people speak a word of English.
I am building another home in a similar area at the moment which you can see at [ https://www.welovecostarica.com/public/department70.cfm ] And you should know that we have VIP Members who live in very remote, rural areas and are delighted with the peace and safety they enjoy.
We would NOT however recommend being away from your home for months and months of the year and leaving it totally vacant. I would not recommend that anywhere as things can go wrong… Leaks can suddenly appear, a tree branch might fall and break a window so someone should keep an eye on your home if you are not present.
There are economically depressed areas where your home will be more vulnerable and where local people will steal things – this would also apply anywhere but the difference is most Gringos are not good at recognizing these areas.
There have been some violent confrontations directed at Gringos – thankfully they are few and far between – and it would appear that the majority these confrontations happen in the touristy areas where there is less sense of community, where people don’t even know who their neighbours are and where people might only visit for a month in the year.
If your wife is a Tica then hopefully she’ll know the area and even better, she has family members whom you could pay $100- $200 per month to visit the home and do basic maintenance for you (specify all responsibilities in a written contract even for family to keep things simple) each week and make sure all is well..
I’m sure other VIP Members will have some good feedback for you and would ask that if anybody does live in a more ‘remote’ area to please chime in and let us know what you do to make sure your home and your family is safe…
