Can i hit some streams etc in CR to pan for a little gold. Don’t want to break any laws.
I will be in Heridia in Aug for seven days and will have a little time to kill and just enjoy the country. Can anyone recommend somewhere such as a stream or river to pan in? How far would it be from Heridia? I will have my own equipment.Thanks to all for the info i have gleaned from this website.
I recommend that a person read all the posts on this forum even if it is something that really doesn’t pertain to your situation. You will glean a better perspective of CR overall imo.

I think this is the first time we’ve had this question but don’t honestly know what to tell you… I believe most gold panning has been done on the Osa Peninsula on the River Carate but if I know that, I’m assuming there’s not much left to find.
As for the legality of the matter, I would guess the gold belongs to the person/entity who has the rights to that particular stretch of the river but I may be wrong.
There is a controversial gold mine called Cerro Crucitas 105 km north of the capital of San José [ http://www.infomine.com/suppliers/minedevelopments/crucitas/welcome.asp ] owned by Vannessa Ventures Ltd.
But don’t go panning for gold there, Vannessa would not like that!
Anybody else out there done any panning for gold in Costa Rica?

I would it would be OK as long as it wasn’t on private land. Lots of country roads, out there with rivers alongside. But we are into the rainy season now and the rivers can rise at an alarming rate, with no warning, even if there is no rain where you are, so you be on alert at all times.
BTW my hubby keeps saying he is going to make a sluice box and try this on the farm….Thanks for the info. I was wondering about the rain and the streams in August as well.
This website has a lot of gold info as well as plans to make plenty of equipment.
