Hi all!
My husband and I have bought a house and are looking to redo the bathroom, the kitchen and possibly the tile floors.
Does anybody know if it is worth trying to do it ourselves (we are quite handy and have done it before) or whether labour and design are cheap enough that it would be better to pay someone to do it.
We noticed a Do It Center in Liberia – does it have everything we would need? And what are prices like compared to North America?
Thanks in advance!
As compared to costs in North America, you will find tile and labor to be ridiculously cheap. Tile here is a commodity rather than the luxury product you’re used to. And many construction laborers are skilled enough to lay it. What you must be careful of is layout. Here, it’s common to begin in one corner and work your way out the door regardless of centering.
Plumbing and electrical fixtures are generally cheaper or on a par with the same items in North America, but anything that is imported will be much more expensive due to transportation costs and import duties.
Much of the cabinetry installed here is locally custom made and of pretty high quality. You won’t find all the choices that you would have in a north American cabinetry store, Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc, but if you can live with the style limitations you can be well taken care of. And cabinetry, too, will be less costly. Most of it is made from tropical hardwoods.
One option is to buy the materials yourself, that way you know what you are getting… then hire local labor to install it all or just help you… the cost this way is ,minimized and you can be sure of what goes into the finished projects.
just my 2 cents worth…
