I am a 55ish woman desiring to move to CR. I have been advised to rent for awhile. I will have SS and some savings. Mybe I will meet a nice man in the future:oops:
Is there someone out there that can give me some advice?

Best advice? Keep reading the posts here! Also, amcostarica.com, ticotimes.com, and duralavida.com. The last one is for the Lake Arenal region.
Try renting by the month in different locations. Sample the beach (hot/humid), the central valley (crowded and pollution concerns), the Arenal area (cooler/quiet/not a lot of shopping), and San Isidro General in the SE (nice climate/good shopping). You will find the perfect place for y o u.

If you’re like many of our fellow Americans, you’ll want to begin now to lose some weight and shape up. Then get a copy of the Kama Sutra and commit it to memory.

Why do you desire CR? How many times have you been to CR? Which areas do you like? It is a very diverse country and you will have to do a lot of driving to figure out what area appeals to you most. After driving from the north to the tip of the south for quite a few years, we decided to buy in the Lake Arenal region. I knew it immediately when I got there. It is a very liveable region, with temperate weather, is non touristy and is about the prettiest place I personally saw in CR, plus the people were very friendly and with a nice mix of Americans. I love all of CR but this area just spoke to me.
Meeting a man? Ehh. Don’t make that your goal! Ticos aren’t that big into monogamy and I don’t know how many single ex-pats are there that aren’t either looking for a tica or just hanging out at the bars drinking. Not to say that there aren’t any great single guys there, but just don’t make that you’re reason for moving to CR.

I too am seeking to rent, Escazu might be too expensive, and I do want to experience the Pacific side as I have already spent time on the Caribbean side and in San Jose.

Perhaps they can help with rental resources, and cetainly they can help with the legal requirements regarding residency. I do believe you might have to become a member, which I would recommend in any event and I see some are paying but 50.00$ a year whereas I have been paying 100.00 (perhaps because of my membership in Casa Canada) but either way. It’s a good thing.
loraine nailed it. don’t come here expecting to find a man. the gringos your age all want some hot chica in her 20’s. the ticos have wives, mistresses, and a host of other women with whom they dally. many of the single women i know say there is a pitiful selection of men in the 50 – 60 age group — most are unhealthy, have unrealistic expectations, and are looking for someone to take care of them. (okay, i am ducking now!!!) we have 75 micro-climates in costa rica. there is something for everyone, but there are also many issues to consider — legal residency being the top priority. but do come check it out. learn spanish, and who knows what will await you. where’s that swash-buckling Diego when we need him! off on his yacht with those cute Cubanas!! jajaja
