Our family will not be able to apply for residency till April 2013. We have done the Nicaraguan jump twice. Once to the beach, and the latest up the river on a boat to Los Carlos.
Interested in seeing Panama for a few days in February. Any recommendations? I am considering driving our vehicle over (Land Rover Defender)? Anyone care to share any experiences?
Would consider beaches or Boquete…have a family of four, with a 4 and 5 year old. Somewhere to relax…don’t think I would care for Panama City. Only interested in the low lands if near the beach…
Thoughts?

Never having been to Panama, I’m unable to comment on that, but be sure to get all the documents you’ll need to drive your car across the border and back. Most Costa Rican attorneys can take care of this for you.

[/quote]Thank you, I will talk to my usual attorney then…I figured there would be some sort of stamp/license or such to prove that the vehicle is mine and grant temp crossing…did not consider that I could simply talk to my lawyer.
I read International Living (and yes, aware of its faults, to be sure)….a lot of articles last yr about Panama and replete with the usual sales push……..
Looks nice and to each their own, narrowing my search to CR, Ecuador and Belize…..one down, 2 to visit still……
I have a good friend who lives in David, Panama and I asked him about getting in and out via car, as I would like to visit him next February or on my second homecoming sometime in May or June of 2013. He said with the proper incoming paperwork getting in isn’t the problem, but he has been hassled frequently on the way out, as apparently the Panamanian border agents like to search with some diligence for cash and stuff going out of the country.
His advice, which I will heed, is take the bus. You know, “and leave the driving to us.” He said that’s a hassle free way of getting in AND out and he simply won’t drive over the border anymore.

Had to laugh in regard to your comment on International Living. I read it too but you need to take it all with a large grain of salt mixed into a reality cocktail. There are some great articles, however, and their email machine never sleeps. Need to get it on Ambien to slow it down sometimes. Good luck on the search-I have spent the last year doing just that and after sifting through all the information and talking to a lot of expats in CR, Belize and Equador, CR finds almost always finds its way to the top. This may have something to do with the dimensionality of the country in that there is a lot of diversity within a relativly small geographic area, thus feeding the needs and desires of a large swath of people. Good luck from a neighbor in a almost neighboring state!
We have friends visiting Ecuador right now, and am looking forward to hearing what their ‘take on it’, is. They have lived and traveled all over the world
I have some British friends who moved here after living in Ecuador for 10+ years, they’re very happy here ….

yes, me too-like the articles, but a lot of them seem to be driven by Ronan’s need for investing……
Good articles, at times a bit annoying and the email thing, I think I blocked them….get the magazine, not the emails…
So far, CR and Ecuador are topping list for me, but like you, still here in US and doing research……

what made them move? restless or other issues?
[i]Our [/i]friends, who have lived in CR for the last 12 years, returned at the weekend from Ecuador and really liked the country. Cooler temps than here, due to the high altitude in places but prices were much lower. For example gas was $2.50 a gallon.
Said the roads were amazing, people were friendly, nice hotel rooms $40-50.
Only negative was the mountainous and windy roads, although in good condition, and she doesn’t care much for heights…:roll:I prefer the beaches, heat and all, though the A/C is a must, at least in Living and bed, rooms…..

Either that, or you have hired a staff of writers to make your posts on the various discussions. Do they get paid by the word, the # of posts or by the hour – if it is the latter, you only owe them for 2 hours today!

Yes, I was rather hectic yesterday, more so today, but I do take time out to talk with others and surf a bit, keeps the mind off how mind numbing this job is, plus the drab and grey landscape in and outside of the office. Today is worse, yet last 2-3 weeks, keep coming out as the #1 or #2 producer in my unit…..guess, perhaps, I am that damn good:wink:Think of me while you are in the sun, fun and more laid back environment, while I am stuck here in increasing fascism and since wife has the $$, will never leave the drab, culture-less Amerika…..
