Has anyone shipped horses over land to CR? I am in Belize and looking to get my horses to CR, I am waiting on a bid by air but with gas prices I am afraid it will be beyond my budget.

I have my own van but I need to know the requirements to ship in through Guatemala, San Salvador, and Nicaragua. I have seen the line up of trucks at the Nica border and am worried the horses could be stuck there for hours or worse days.

    Any feedback is appreciated.

    Thanks Scott ,
I had read most of those posts a few months ago when I thought I had my lots in Heredia sold. Now a new buyer and a new chance to get to CR. I know the routine from the US but we are in Belize and I have my own van so I was trying to find out if anyone had done the overland trip. Crossing 4 borders gives me the jitters but I figured I needed to check it out since sending by air will be prohibitive.

I did not see an answer to your old question about returning horses to the US. Yes it can be done , but it must route through Miami for the southern US and there are quarantine costs that almost double your costs. In addition if the USDA vet think there is a problem they can order new tests and more delays and more fees. It can be a real nightmare, so if someone is not sure they will stay in CR they may want to leave their horses stateside until it is certain they will stay.

Meanwhile if anyone has ANY experience crossing Central American borders PLEASE SHARE!!
