Lair’s Retired & LIVING in Costa Rica. – The Beginning.

My last day at work was a Wednesday. One week later, I flew out of San Francisco and winged my way to Costa Rica. (And, boy, were my arms tired!)

For the next month I was ensconced in language school, shaping up my Spanish. I also began the search for a permanent place to live – whatever “permanent” means, and I am still not sure what that is.

I knew almost no one in Costa Rica when I moved here last year, although I had visited this country dozens of times over the past 15 years or so. After having spent my working life in the United States as a theater director, a musician, a newspaper editor, a social worker, and a nonprofit fundraiser – none of which had made me independently wealthy, alas – I never could afford to retire in the country of my birth.

Not in my wildest dreams! Luckily for me, I didn’t want to retire there. I had read somewhere that one should not end a life without having lived it in at least two different cultures. That’s what I wanted to do.

A couple of years ago, I had an angioplasty – kinda put things in perspective! I decided not to spend the remainder of my life working at a job. There is more to life, I believed – so I embarked on the adventure of finding out just what there is beyond “job.”

This part of my life belongs to me! And I can afford to retire in Costa Rica. It is a welcoming, civilized, principled and beautiful country. There are more than 60,000 United Statesians living here. They are a welcoming bunch of nice folks, I’ve discovered, who seem quite willing to advise and assist newcomers.
