Costa Rica Living in the Sierpe River Area – Free video interview with Trevor Cameron

On a whim to buy a property to start a fishing camp on the Sierpe River, I made the seemingly long trip to Sierpe and the Osa Peninsula.

What I found was way beyond what I had expected. Sierpe, a tiny town full of friendly people was, to me, the best I had seen in all of my trips to Costa Rica. This was 20 years ago and Sierpe has changed significantly.

The old Sierpe was dirt roads, a miserable road in from the Pan American Highway at Palmar Sur and a population made up of almost entirely Ticos. Everyone shook hands and there was not a face without a smile.

Today it is different but still holds the charm and most of the smiling Ticos that I met 20 years ago. Now the streets are paved, the road into Sierpe is newly paved and takes only 15 minutes from the airport in Palmar where there are daily flights to San Jose.

There are two excellent riverfront cafes, several nice hotels with hot water and air-conditioning, a bakery, butcher shop, hardware, new modern grocery store, dentist office, clinic, outboard motor repair, electronics repair, video rental, Chinese restaurant, boat manufacturing company and outfitters for every type of recreation.

Sierpe is not the town you expect when you drive in through the rice fields and banana plantations in a part of Costa Rica not known for being rich. Sierpe is the gateway to the Osa Peninsula where thousands of tourists come each year to enjoy the remote wilderness of this incredible part of the world.

Most of the people coming to the Osa Peninsula, Drake Bay, Corcovado National Park, Cano Island, the mangrove and remote beach resorts, travel through Sierpe. There is a daily ritual where one group which is leaving, arrive on boats coming up the Sierpe River head off to planes, rental cars and buses.

About an hour and a half later, another internationally diverse group that has gotten off the planes and buses or parked their rental cars arrives looking for their boat to head to some remote location on the Osa Peninsula.

Few actually spend the night in Sierpe, just the lucky ones who come late in the afternoon and cannot catch their boat until the next day. Those who spend an evening in Sierpe can enjoy a delicious dinner at one of the riverfront cafes, a night time river tour where they will see lots of crocodiles and other reptiles or visit with boat captains that all have a story to tell and a smile to share.

In the early morning you will hear howler monkeys and most likely have views of mist on the river and mountains in the distance. Sierpe is peaceful, quaint, safe, friendly and one of my favorite towns in the entire world.
