Living in the Sierpe River Area, Costa Rica – Local kids have fishing day of their lives.
If you have ever traveled through Sierpe, on the Northern edge of the Osa Peninsula you may have met the boys of Sierpe Baggage Handlers Union 856.
Well, that’s a stretch; there is no union just a group of kids who help get your luggage from the taxi or bus, down onto the dock and eventually into the right boat. They work for tips and are learning the basics of entrepreneurship and capitalism. If they work, they receive money in exchange and can buy things.
They are there when the boats arrive up river to unload the boats and bring the luggage to the waiting taxis. Flights arrive in Palmar, just 15 minutes away at 10:30 and once again they are there to meet the taxis arriving with more people heading down the famous Sierpe River.
You cannot walk by any of these kids without them saying hello and shaking your hand. They are great little kids who are clean, friendly, neat, hard working and always smiling.
Trevor Cameron of Grupo Amigos De Sierpe, a local real estate agent came up with the idea of taking these kids for a day of fishing on the ocean. Some of them had never seen the ocean which is just 30 minutes down river.
Trevor and the kind people at Aldea Del Rio a local sport fishing company and the Las Vegas Bar and restaurant sponsored the event. All the parents were contacted and gave permission. A lunch and cold drinks were packed, boat filled with fuel and off they went. You could see their smiles from one hundred meters away.
Away from the dock, down the winding beautiful river, out through the “boca” (mouth) and into the big blue Pacific Ocean. Captain’s Joey and Ezra of Aldea Del Rio with their boat and Trevor to make sure everyone was happy.
It didn’t take long and they were in the blue water and catching fish. All 6 of the kids caught fish and plenty of them. A total of 40 fish were caught that day including 18 Spanish mackerel, 21 Amberjacks and a rogue Yellowfin Tuna.
Back in Sierpe the Las Vegas put on a dinner for the kids with all of the trimmings. The fish were cleaned and sent home with the kids for their families to enjoy.
It was a great day and the rewards for the sponsors just keep coming with every smile from these great kids who had the time of their life. Trevor tells me that it is now planned to be an annual event and hopes for more kids and maybe even more often.
