Living & Retiring in Costa Rica – Happy New Year and a Happy New Life?
Another New Year is upon us and many of you are considering a new life in Costa Rica at some stage in the future.
Some of you may be concerned about what challenges a new life in Costa Rica might hold in store for you but if so, ask yourself this question …
What’s the worst thing that could happen to you?
You would need to make fewer adjustments living in Costa Rica than you would living in any other developing country. You will find nearly all the comforts of home here whereas in Nicaragua for example, you would definitely need to have much more of a pioneering spirit to survive.
And I am not criticizing Nicaragua, facts are facts and although their roads are far better than ours, Nicaragua is many years behind Costa Rica which is why we have a 500,000+ or so Nicaraguans who have fled their own country to live a better life in Costa Rica. Thousands of Nicaraguans are turned back at the Costa Rican border every month…
However it does take a certain kind of person to enjoy the ‘expat’ life and after a year – you have to give yourself at least six months to a year to get the feel of living in a new country, right? – maybe you will decide that living in a foreign country is just not for you, would that really be such a disaster?
Of course not because you have had a life enriching experience living in another country, in another culture and, you might be surprised how beneficial that experience could be for you.
What is the best thing that could happen to you?
Like me you might just end up sitting there typing an email to your friends saying silly things like: “I love this place and the people, I never knew life could be this good and my only wish? I really wish I’d done this sooner…”
