New Highway Improvements San Ramon – San José Has More Delays
Road improvements that were to begin on the road with the country’s heaviest traffic have been delayed until March or April while the company with the concession wants to readjust their prices.
In addition to the US$266 million they are asking for $53,000,000 more because of increased oil, steel and asphalt prices.
The Costa Rican budget office has initially rejected this increase.
A Portuguese, Spanish and Costa Rican consortium has the concession and this is considered a very serious delay because it’s during the driest time of the year for this type of work. Although they are contractually obliged to finish the project in less than 25 months whatever the weather.
The widening of the San José-San Ramón (58 kilómetros) route is expected to reduce the traveling time between San José and Alajuela from 34 to 15 minutes during peak hours. The toll amount for the entire journey is expected to be about 675 colones or US$1.30
There will probably also be further problems and delays because of the necessary expropiations that must be done to complete this project. 217 expropriations must be done byt, only 120 have be finalized..
As you can see from the illustration below, Costa Rica has been waiting a long time for this project to begin…
