Whether you’re an arm chair expat or perpetual bed and breakfast tourist in the earlier stages of expatriation, you may at some point wonder, did I miss the boat?

Will that finca or ocean view lot be within my reach when I’m ready to cut my ties and take the plunge? We can always wait out the latest gadget introduction, expecting prices to drop once supply catches up with demand. Last year’s cutting edge toy becomes a gift with a full tank at our local gas station.

But, barring general economic malaise, real estate behaves differently and will continue to appreciate.

My mom’s family emigrated from Cuba back in the 80’s via Costa Rica, they lived several years in Heredia waiting for a US visa. They loved their stay and spent the last 20 years planning their return, not to Cuba, but to Costa Rica…

Last year my uncle passed away suddenly. He’d retired from long haul trucking and had just put his Miami home up for sale. The house sold, he never made it to the closing or to Heredia, Costa Rica.

His kids have picked up where he left off (dare I mix another metaphor, sure) and held in check by paper chains and caught in the vortex of car payments, mortgages and private schools, they’ll never leave…

Can anyone judge the level of fear and greed in the Costa Rica real estate market today. Any freshman financial wiz will tell you, timing any market (real estate included) is often a crap shoot.

Am I going to wait for a correction that may not come? Assuming it arrives, what is the price of five more Milwaukee winters? Will a 20 percent correction cover it?

Years ago I saw an interview with actor Omar Sharif. He spoke of how he’d made and lost several fortunes in his life. What impressed me most, was not his fortunes, but the ease with which he was able to recount his losses and the confidence that he could start over any time, despite the fact his career had long since peaked.

No doubt he knew and expected the next life changing opportunity was just days away.

If by chance you missed your boat, relax. Through the chaos and confusion that comes with expatriation we find endless risks and rewards… Nowhere is this more true than Costa Rica.

“The opportunity of a lifetime comes by every 7 days.” Be there when it passes your radar. Lean forward ready to jump, if you miss it another will come by soon enough.
