34 Landslides Cause Major Damage – Plan for delays on Costa Rica main North – South Interamericana highway from San Jose
34 Landslides cause major damage during tropical storm Alma, drivers should plan for serious delays on Costa Rica main North – South Interamericana highway from San Jose.
Tropical storm Alma has literally shredded the main Interamericana highway that takes all passenger and cargo traffic to Pérez Zeledón, the southern zone of Costa Rica and Panama
Whole sections of road have disappeared under the tremendous force of avalanches of mud, trees and rocks. Other sections of road simply collapsed as the rain washed out support from underneath.
The most serious damage occurred 29 kilometers before you reach San Isidro de El General and the communities most affected are: División, El Jardín, Boquete, Lagunillas, Túnel, La Hortensia, Payner, La Ese and San Rafael Norte de Pérez Zeledón.
Continued heavy rain has hindered efforts to repair damaged sections of the road.
For those of you with plans to visit geographical areas south of Cartago in the near future, it might be sensible to confirm the exact road conditions with someone living in the area you plan on visiting before you leave…
