Pets in Costa Rica – Jaco McKee Foundation continues excellent work

The McKee Foundation Costa Rica www.mckeeproject.org continues to do excellent work throughout the country, and especially in the Central Pacific area of Jaco and the surrounding communities.

This past week Mckee held a spay and neuter clinic in the town of Esterillos Oeste where they added 57 dogs and cats to their over 1,200 success stories. To be able to do 57 procedures in one day took a lot of planning and organization and the help of numerous volunteers.

The incredible veterinary team of Dr. Blas Rivas from Alajuela and Dr. Olman Solano from Atenas hit the ground running, and stopped just briefly for lunch before getting back into the make shift surgery center located in the Esterillos Oeste elementary school. Dr. Rivas and Dr. Solano were assisted during the surgeries by local volunteers Doris Schluckebier, Elisabeth Lubbers and Pat Chidester, all local residents who simply have a love for animals.

Local volunteers Kurt and Kristy Raihn were essential in helping to organize and raise support. Local residents donated money to cover the cost of the procedures for families who could not afford it. No families or their animals were turned away. The Azul Restaurant donated lunch for the Veterinary team and the volunteers and others offered accommodations for the Veterinarians for the night. It truly was a community effort.

This event more than doubled the efforts and success of last years clinic that was held in the same location.

The McKee Foundation is primarily an animal rescue organization. They take dogs and cats off the streets and assist in finding them homes. They are a non-profit organization relying primarily on donations from helpful supporters here in Costa Rica as well as the United States and friends in other countries as well.

The Jaco Mckee project is run by Katja Bader and a host of volunteers. Before they release animals for adoption the animals are spayed or neutered and given their standard shots. The project also assist in nursing injured animals back to health and then finding good homes for them. The animals can be adopted at no cost, but donations are greatly appreciated.

So many times people have the misconception that foreigners move to a country like Costa Rica to just sit back and reap the benefits of living in such a beautiful country. The McKee project and events like the Esterillos spay and neuter clinic show how much many expats are giving back to the communities they live in and how they are working side by side with Ticos to help make Costa Rica an even more spectacular place for all of us.
