Costa Rica Rental Properties – The Psycho Tenant
Well it had to happen one day….
After helping dozens of our VIP Members to successfully rent out their apartments, we finally and unfortunately came across the “Psycho Renter.”
Often the Psycho Renter can appear to be quite charming which he certainly was when this Canadian man first visited the apartment with our Recommended Realtor for the area.
Apart from the very serious problems detailed below in the letter from the property management company, we have also received unofficial complaints from his neighbours about the smell of marijuana wafting out from his apartment.
So the Psycho Renter has created quite a reputation for himself in this project and here’s a summarized version of the 7th December 2009 letter from the property management company in English about this undesirable cretin:
- On Sunday the 29th April 2009 “… he broke the main glass door at the entrance of the building in which he lives.”
- “On the 5th July 2009, he attacked and verbally threatened the security office Pedro Aragon, saying that if he had a revolver, he would use it against him…“
- “On previous days, the man allowed a girl to enter and told them that she was authorized to enter at all times. A few days after receiving this authorization, the officer called to verify she could enter but he did not answer the telephone so the guard allowed her to enter. A little while later the Psycho Renter appeared at the security guard box screaming at the officers, breaking a window, and throwing various things on the floor and then throwing eggs at the refrigerator and the computer screens. He was never held responsible for the damages caused.”
I’m no attorney but if any of these three incidents had occurred in the UK or the USA, I’m guessing that the police would have been called, he would have been arrested and serious charges would have been filed against him…
So this cretin has in fact been very lucky so far that the Ticos detest confrontation, are such mild mannered people and have not reported him to the police which is all fine and dandy but, who pays for all the damages?
Acting on behalf of the owner of this apartment, a formal legal complaint has been filed against this person so on the advice from our client’s attorney, his name has been blurred out in the original letter below in Spanish…
What has not been mentioned is the incident where the Psycho Renter threw one of the fully clothed, Costa Rican security guards in the swimming pool because the guard was doing his job and politely requested the Psycho Renter to remove his dog from the pool…
Then when the Psycho Renter disappeared on a boat to the “antarctic” without informing the owner and allowed someone else to live there (who told us that he would be staying for six months), which would have been way past the one year rental contract period – we were understandably concerned about the condition of the apartment so, I contacted the owner and expressed my concerns.
Although our customer was delighted I was looking out for him, the Psycho Renter was not at all happy about this and telephoned me three times to swear and threaten me like the pathetic bully he probably was in school 20 years ago.
However he was kind enough to clearly identify himself when he left a message on my cellphone answering service and our client’s attorney has the following recording:
“Hey Scott. this is XXXXX from XXXXX, the guy you have been fucking with my life, you and your stupid cunt girlfriend have got a lot of nerve fucking telling my landlord that I have fucked up, when I haven’t, you have absolutely no idea of what is going on and you guys are just stirring the pot. I will be in touch with you buddy, I will be back in Costa Rica shortly and I am gonna come and find you, because I haven’t gone, I haven’t left, I paid my rent up until today and yes I have a friend staying there but at the end of the day you have a lot of nerve stirring it up for me, I will be in touch buddy.”
What a sweetheart eh?
Would this guy have been arrested in the USA? Would love to hear your thoughts and feelings about this incident, please leave them for me below:
