Hummingbirds in Costa Rica – Trogon Lodge Free video
Trogon Lodge is at an elevation of around 7,000 feet and located in San Gerardo de Dota, near Cerro de la Muerte, one of the Costa Rica’s highest peaks. The drive takes about 2 hours from San José heading southeast in the Pan-American highway.
Trogon Lodge is sits on a 105 acre farm and it’s a perfect, little escape with very affordable rates from the modern world, where you can relax and enjoy the fresh mountain air or, perhaps take a hike and spot some of Costa Rica’s most magnificent birds, especially the birds within the trogon family including the famous Quetzal.
Now we didn’t see any when we were there but we only had time to stop for lunch and didn’t go for a long walk.
Of course you can spot lots of other birds too and if you are interested in seeing the kinds of birds you are likely to find in this area, take a look at the Trogon Lodge Bird List here.
I can’t recommend the accommodation simply because we never went inside them but the freshly caught trout – trucha – lunch in the lodge’s restaurant was very tasty…
Trogon Lodge is part of what is now a protected Forest Reserve, named Los Santos Forest Reserve. It gets its name since most of the towns belonging to the Reserve are named after a Saint (Santo or Santa in Spanish). Therefore, we can find the towns of Santa María, San Marcos, San Pablo, San Gerardo, among others.
I should point out that this is not a paid advertisement. I have no idea who runs the place but do enjoy visiting this area with it’s huge swathes of completely pristine rain forest.
