The Autoridad Reguladora de los Servicios Públicos (ARESEP) which regulates the prices of electricity, water, gasoline and a few other public services has just approved an average 10.1% increase in the price for residential electricity which should allow the Instituto Costarricense de Electricidad (ICE) to continue investing in new infrastructure to help generate more electricity.

For a home that consumes an average of 250 kilowatts per hour per month (kW/h), this increase represents an increase of ¢1,800 (about $3.50) so this average family would pay ¢18,950 instead of ¢17,150

These are the new rates as published today in La Nacion newspaper… The new approved average kW/h prices are listed under the ‘PRECIO PROMEDIO APROBADO’ column below:

Commercial rates will see a 10,52% increase from an average of ¢97.44 to ¢107.7 kW/h.

The current rate of exchange for the US dollar and Costa Rica colon can always be found on the main page of the Costa Rica Central bank website here.
