This week the Costa Rica government officially inaugurated the last section of the highway from Quepos to Dominical which now connects the South Pacific Zone by one road.

With this new road, you can now travel from San Jose to Golfito in four and a half hours instead of six and, the trucks coming from Guanacaste will be able to go to the Southern Zone without having to travel through San Jose.

This project was initially designed in 1962 by the Banco Centroamericano de Integracion Economica (Central American Bank for Economic Integration), but it was put aside by different governments.

The road starts in Barranca, Puntarenas and ends at Baru, Perez Zeledon, where it connected to the Interamericana Sur. The total cost is estimated to be around $51 million.

The President of Costa Rica Oscar Arias stated that: “Today, tourists can have breakfast in San Jose, lunch in Puntarenas, coffee in Manuel Antonio and dinner in Uvita. The Pacific is no longer divided into two different isolated poles.”

Previously, the Quepos-Dominical section was a dirt road best driven with a four wheel drive vehicle. In those days it took close to two hours between each point but now, the travel time is about 40 minutes by any car, even a standard car.

Pedro Castro, Vice Minister of Public Works, said that the only thing they need to complete are the final details of the bridge over the river La Perla which suffered delays due to legal obstacles for the expropriation of land.
