The wettest state in the US is Hawaii which normally receives about 67 inches of rain per year, the second wettest state is Louisiana with 58 inches.
Pah!
The 13 year average for Golfito is 193 inches per year and 153″ for San Carlos!
Even in the San Jose area the 13 year average is 70 inches of rain – more than the wettest state in the US – and, we’ve had a lot more wet dogs days than that this year …
In San Jose September is the wettest month of the year, for Puntarenas, Orotina, Golfito and Heredia it’s October and in the San Carlos area it rains more in November.
According to Gabriela Chincilla of the Instituto Meteorológico Nacional, so far in the month of September the San Jose area – which normally receives about 25 liters of rain per square meter – has received more than four times that amount … (*)
It is very, very WET here in Costa Rica, the roads are taking a beating, there are landslides on most of the main roads including the new “highway” and, if you have plans to visit Cost Rica in the near future, come prepared!
If you plan on driving anywhere, make sure you know your routes and alternate routes… just in case!
