When foreigners and Ticos alike think of the Central Pacific Coast the town that most readily comes to mind is Jaco, the most developed beach town in the area.

Jaco has developed from a sleepy fishing and surfing village to one of the most popular and infrastructure heavy beach towns in the country. This pedestrian friendly town is perfect for the potential buyer seeking a hassle free investment in the form of a condominium or even retirees where every amenity is within walking distance.

The convenience of living here cannot be underestimated including the close proximity to San Jose and the international airport as well as the number of restaurants, supermarkets, health clinics, bars, and shopping centers available.

However, Jaco by its very nature is probably not the right place for every buyer, luckily for those who seek a more tranquil, laid back feel there are other towns such as Punta Leona, Herradura, Hermosa and Esterillos close by and yet seemingly miles away from the hustle and bustle of Jaco.

Another famous destination is Punta Leona, a still undiscovered treat for many foreigners not used to viewing such true white sand beaches on the Central Pacific. The exclusive community which has developed around these beaches has been the playground for wealthy Costa Ricans for several years.

Besides offering some of the most exquisite white sand beaches in Costa Rica, this is a resort style environment with restaurants, tennis courts, small grocery stores, discotheque and even a church.

The Punta Leona community is perfect for vacation and permanent family homes. Some of the most exclusive single standing family homes with captivating panoramic ocean views can be found in this community.

Punta Leona consists of 750 acres, part of which has been declared a wildlife reserve to protect the hundreds of species of wildlife including as the white-faced monkey, spider monkeys, sloths, coati and armadillos that inhabit the area.

This is a community that has really appealed mainly to the local market, most of the homes, condominiums and apartments here are owned by Costa Ricans residing in San Jose who visit on the weekends and holidays.

The one drawback here is that the ocean view properties due to the hilly nature of the area are not walking distance to the beach or would be a difficult uphill walk and the homes that are walking distance are generally older and require some renovation.

For those who prefer a less community feel and more independence, single standing family homes could be found in small neighbourhoods in the town of Herradura, just 5 kms north of Jaco. This town helped put the Central Pacific on the map due to the Marriot Los Suenos Golf Course Resort and Marina, the only one of its kind in Central America.

The Los Suenos resort community consists of luxurious million dollar homes, condominiums as well as restaurants, shops, boutiques, an 18 hole golf course and marina that are all open to the public and has boosted the area’s development including the construction of a commercial center with restaurants, a Radio Shack, DVD store and more notably, a popular grocery chain carrying international products much to the delight of many of the North American expatriates in this area.
