Cost of Living – Gas prices in Costa Rica
According to official statistics from the Energy Information Administration the US average price per gallon for 1st August 2011 across the USA is now $3.711 per gallon with prices lower on the east coast than the west coast.
Gas Price Increase in Costa Rica – As of August 2011:
- Regular gas is 683 colones per liter x 3.78541178 = 2,585 colones per gallon (US$5.17)
- Super gas is 706 colones per liter x 3.78541178 = 2,672 colones per gallon (US$5.34) and
- Diesel is 636 colones per liter x 3.78541178 = 2,407 colones per gallon (US$4.81)
- LPG is 389 colones per liter x 3.78541178 = 1,472 colones per gallon (US$2.94)
1 US gallon = 3.78541178 liters and according to the Banco Central de Costa Rica, the current rate of exchange is 499.72
Taxes on Gas:
In Costa Rica, taxes make up about 37.74% of the price for regular gasoline. In the UK taxes make up 75% of the price and only about 11% in the US….
We Should Consider Ourselves Lucky:
So when it comes to gas prices, consider yourselves very lucky if you’re in the USA because even though gas prices in Costa Rica are about 40% higher than they are in the US, if you were living in the UK, you would paying about 125% more.
The average price in the UK is GBP135.6 per litre which x 3.78541178 is GBP513.3 per gallon which is US$8.36 per gallon for gasoline or, as it’s called in the UK – “petrol”.
